Acapulco Gold Interview: Janette Beckman

Who was the most different in a picture than they were perceived in person?

I remember getting the assignment to shoot Public Enemy. Everyone was warning me that they were very hard core revolutionary, didn't like white people, and would be a difficult shoot. It was quite the contrary. They were very polite, very cooperative, and Flav of course was very funny. It was an early shoot as you can see by the size of his clock.

Did you know that at the time that the pictures were being taken that the subjects would be as famous and/or interesting as they turned out to be?

Oh no! Well interesting yes, famous no. Although some artists you can tell. They have "it". Whatever that is. Something about the young LL Cool J, or Chuck D – charisma. It's almost something you can feel. Boy George definitely had it. (I shot him the week before his single went to #1 in UK). It's an attitude. And of course the music has to be good.
